Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, it was another successful year of cyber camp for Huntsville City Schools. More than 130 middle and high school students registered for the 2020 version of the camp, which had a different feel from previous years.
“It’s the first time we’ve tried this,” said Jim Morse, Huntsville High School’s cyber security instructor and this year’s camp director. “Teachers are on cameras. Students are on cameras.”
Huntsville City Schools' Cyber Security Program has grown in popularity of the years, and Morse said that recent events should help see that trend continue.
“I think it’s more evident today with the COVID shutdowns and everybody going virtual that cyber security is really important,” Morse said.
Morse says he was not alone in making sure the unique camp was able to take place. He says cyber instructors from around the district were instrumental in not only teaching at the camp, but making sure their students knew that the camp was still happening.
Mark Green (Jemison HS/McNair JHS), Teri Mitchell (Challenger), Vivian Johnson-Boyd (Hampton Cove MS), and Lindsay O’Neal (Whitesburg) were the instructors that Morse credited with making the virtual camp possible.
