The Huntsville City Board of Education welcomed its newest member and conducted its annual reorganization of board leadership at a ceremony held on Monday, Nov. 4, 2024.
Municipal Judge Sybil Cleveland administered the oath of office to newly elected board member Chaundra Jones, representing District 1, and to Carlos Mathews, reelected to serve District 5.
“I am looking forward to working with this board,” said Jones. “One of my favorite sayings is, ‘When the children are well, the village is well,’ so I look forward to serving every student and ensuring they have an excellent educational experience.”
Following the swearing-in, the board held its annual reorganization, unanimously electing Carlos Mathews as board president following a nomination from District 4 Representative Ryan Renaud. Mathews, who previously served as president from October 2022 to October 2023, expressed his dedication to promoting positive educational outcomes in Huntsville.
“I am honored and humbled to be elected to serve as president of the Huntsville City Board of Education,” Mathews said. “Serving our community and ensuring our students have access to the highest quality education remains my top priority. I look forward to collaborating with our board, educators, and community to continue driving improvements and preparing our students for success.”
In addition to electing Mathews as president, the board unanimously elected Renaud to serve as vice president following a nomination from District 3 Representative Andrea Alvarez. The board also re-elected Holly McCarty, the District 2 representative, to continue serving as the board’s third presiding officer.
